As we step into 2024, there's this mix of excitement and, let's be real, a hint of nervousness.  2024 feels so very futuristic to many of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s.  I had a chat with a pastor friend over dinner this past Saturday, and we couldn't help but discuss the craziness of the past week – Japan, Iceland, and another missile launch from North Korea.

Our theme for 2024 is straight from the words of Jesus in John 15. Picture this: Jesus, knowing he's about to face some serious trouble, gathers his disciples for a heart-to-heart. This section in the gospel of John is often called Jesus' farewell discourse – the moment when he imparts wisdom to his followers before the storm hits.

Our leadership team spent some quality time in prayer and discussions about 2024, and we felt a clear direction from God – we're called to face outward.

What does that mean? It's about asking questions like: How can we better serve our neighbors? How can we better champion our city? What ways can we extend our service beyond our community? Two words kept echoing in our conversations: Service and Discipleship.

So how do that well? Enter John 15:1-11.  Jesus lays it out for us.

Let's break it down a bit. Three crucial questions Jesus wants us to ponder: Who is Jesus? What are we supposed to do? Why should we obey?

Who is Jesus? The vine imagery hits hard, especially for Jesus' Jewish audience. Referring back to Isaiah 5:3-7, Jesus challenges the pride associated with their national identity. He's essentially saying, "Hey, your jewish identity, attempt to observe the law, or any other accolades won’t cut It.  Without me, you're not producing any real fruit."

How do we practically abide in Jesus? Vv 9-10. Jesus invites us into his love, emphasizing that our obedience flows from his love for us. It's not a demand for his benefit; it's an invitation for our enrichment.

Think about your relationship with your parents or your kids. Obedience isn't just about following rules; it becomes a reflection of trust and understanding. Similarly, Jesus wants us to deepen our connection with him through obedience rooted in love and mutual respect.

So, here it is – the theme for 2024: Rooted in Grace - Deepening Roots Through Abiding Practices.

It is an invitation to go deep, to sink our roots into the source of life – Jesus.  As we embark on this journey, let's embrace the transformative power found only in Jesus. Get ready for a year of growth, community, and rooted grace. Let's dive in together!

Psalm 139 Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Psalm 139, King David beautifully unravels the profound nature of God's intimate knowledge and omnipresence in every aspect of our lives. Let's delve into the rich tapestry of this psalm to discover the depth of God's connection with us.

1. His All-Knowing Knowledge:

David commences by acknowledging the boundless knowledge of God. In verses 2 and 4, he marvels at God's awareness of every detail of his life – from the moments of sitting and rising to the unspoken words forming on his tongue. This recognition of God's all-encompassing knowledge highlights the intricate involvement God has in our daily existence.

2. His Inescapable Presence:

Acknowledging the inescapable presence of God, David declares that there is no place where God is not. Whether ascending to heaven or making a bed in the depths of Sheol, God is there (v. 8). The unwavering love and care of God are emphasized in verses 10-12, where even darkness cannot hide us from His guiding and supporting presence. David reflects on his own journey, realizing that he was never alone, even in the darkest moments.

3. Fearfully and Wonderfully Made:

The term "fearfully" conveys a sense of reverence, similar to the awe felt in the presence of something sacred. "Wonderfully made" emphasizes our distinctiveness and uniqueness among God's creations. This recognition positions humans as the pinnacle of God's design, reflecting His intelligence and creativity in every aspect of our existence.

The affirmation in Ephesians 2:10 echoes this sentiment, emphasizing our purpose as God's masterpieces created for good works. Our design, encompassing the physical, biological, mechanical, functional, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects, showcases the vast intelligence and creativity of our Creator.

I pray these profound truths of Psalm 139 resonate deeply within our hearts. As we meditate on the all-knowing knowledge and inescapable presence of our Creator, let these truths be the guard over your lives. May the understanding that we are fearfully and wonderfully made by a wise and creative God inspire confidence in every step we take. Embrace the assurance that God is the author of our story, and in His hands, our narrative is secure. Let these reflections shape our prayers, guide our actions, and deepen our intimacy with the One who knows us intricately and loves us boundlessly.  Happy New Year!

Life's Blueprint: Surrender, Rest, and Relationships in Psalm 127

Psalm 127, attributed to King Solomon, intricately weaves together three essential themes: The Call to Surrender, True Wisdom in Resting in God, and Valuing Relationships as Divine Blessings.

Theme 1: The Call to Surrender

Psalm 127 resonates with a resolute call to surrender our plans to the greater architect, emphasizing that acknowledging God's guidance transcends the limitations of our individual efforts. Solomon, drawing from a comprehensive exploration of life's pursuits in Ecclesiastes 2, shares the wisdom gained from his experiences. He asserts that without God's guidance, every endeavor is futile, akin to chasing after the wind (Ecclesiastes 2:11). This acknowledgment seamlessly leads us to the second theme.

Theme 2: True Wisdom in Resting in God

Living in a city defined by the mantra "Ppali ppali" (do everything quickly), a place propelled by achievements and relentless pursuits, Psalm 127:2 becomes a poignant reminder. Solomon states, "It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep." In a society where success is often equated with external accomplishments, Solomon challenges this prevailing notion.

True fulfillment, Solomon emphasizes, emerges when we cease the ceaseless striving that the city fosters, finding rest in the assurance that unless the Lord is the architect of our work, our efforts are ultimately in vain. True rest is only attainable when grounded in a firm trust that God holds us in His hands.

Theme 3: Valuing Relationships as Divine Blessings

Psalm 127 extols the profound blessing found in valuing relationships as God's gifts. Transcending mere human connections, the people around us become conduits through which God's grace and love flow into our lives. Recognizing relationships as God’s blessings serves as a powerful antidote to the emptiness of relentless material pursuits. The essence of life's beauty is discovered in shared experiences, love, and support—not in the accumulation of material possessions.

Psalm 127 challenges us to surrender our plans, find wisdom in resting in God, and treasure relationships as God’s blessings. In a world that often emphasizes individual achievements, this Psalm stands as a guiding light, urging us to seek meaning and fulfillment in surrender, rest, and the richness of meaningful connections.

Psalm 46: Be STill (MP Wednesday)

Life is a journey marked by unpredictable twists and turns, where moments of tranquility can swiftly give way to storms of uncertainty. In these turbulent times, the sentiments expressed in Psalm 46 offer a profound source of comfort and truth, guiding us through the ebb and flow of life.

God as Refuge and Strength: A Solid Rock in the Storm

In the melody of Psalm 46, the resounding refrain echoes with the assurance that God is our refuge and strength, an unwavering source of support. The imagery of a fortress invites us to seek solace in the arms of our Creator when life's storms threaten to overwhelm.

Trusting God Amidst Chaos: A Call to Faith

The vivid portrayal of natural calamities serves as a powerful backdrop for the call to trust in God. Despite life's disruptions, we are urged not to succumb to fear but to anchor our faith in the faithfulness of God.

The Presence of God: Finding Joy by the River

Psalm 46 paints a vivid picture of a city rejoicing by the river, reminiscent of the Han river in Seoul that splits the city. This river becomes a symbolic representation of the joy found in the constant presence of God. In the midst of our fast-paced, demanding world, the psalmist's call to "be still" emerges as a potent reminder. It is an invitation to pause, to quiet the noise that surrounds us daily, and to find comfort and peace in the transformative power of God's unwavering presence. In a culture that perpetually strives for more, the call to "be still" stands as a counter-cultural anthem—an anthem that encourages us to cease our incessant striving and, instead, to rest in the knowledge that God is ever-present.

To "be still" is not a passive act of resignation but an intentional surrender, a recognition that amid the ceaseless demands of life, there exists a source of unshakable peace. It's an acknowledgment that the transformative power of God's presence has the ability to calm the storms within us—the storms of anxiety, doubt, and the relentless pursuit of life.

The river, as a metaphor for God's constant presence, flows not just beside us but through the very fabric of our existence. It's an unceasing current of grace, joy, and peace that sustains and refreshes us, even in the midst of life's chaotic currents. When we learn to be still, we open ourselves to the gentle, yet powerful, influence of this river of God, allowing it to reshape our perspectives, calm our anxieties, and bring forth the profound joy that only comes from resting in God's presence.

Gospel in the Storm

At the heart of Psalm 46, the Gospel is seamlessly interwoven into its fabric. The image of Jesus in the boat with terrified disciples facing a life-threatening storm mirrors our own turbulent experiences. When Jesus enters the boat, the storm rages, yet there is an unexplainable peace. This mirrors Christ's work on the cross, where His sacrifice brings peace amid life's tumultuous storms.

As we navigate life's challenges, Psalm 46 becomes our guiding light, pointing us toward the unchanging truths of the Gospel. In Christ, we discover a refuge, a firm foundation amidst chaos, and the constant presence of a loving Savior. Let the transformative power of Psalm 46 be your guide, leading you to a peace that transcends the tumult of this world.

Psalm 27 "Wait on the Lord"

In the midst of life's uncertainties, Psalm 27 emerges as a profound expression of trust and confidence in God. Penned by David during a challenging season of his life, this timeless psalm resonates with believers facing various trials. As we delve into its verses, we uncover a journey marked by confidence, a deep desire for God's presence, heartfelt pleas, and a call to patience.

Confidence:

Verses 1-3: Confidence in God's Protection Psalm 27 commences with David's fearless trust in the Lord as the ultimate source of strength and salvation. In the face of adversaries, David declares the Lord as his light and salvation, showcasing unwavering confidence. This section encourages us to anchor our trust in God, even amidst life's challenges.

Presence:

Verses 4-6: Desire for God's Presence David's psalm takes a turn, revealing a profound yearning to dwell in the house of the Lord and behold His beauty. Amid challenging situations, David prioritizes God's presence over deliverance, emphasizing that true joy and safety are found in the intimate company of the Almighty.

Plea:

Verses 7-10: Prayer for God's Guidance and Mercy Transitioning to a plea, David implores God for guidance and mercy, acknowledging his dependence on divine direction. In times of uncertainty, David's prayer serves as a model for seeking God's face and relying on His unfailing mercy.

Patience:

Verses 11-14: Encouragement to Wait on the Lord The concluding verses present a powerful exhortation to embrace the challenging discipline of waiting on the Lord. This act of patience, far from passive, requires trust and endurance. David's belief in witnessing the goodness of the Lord sustains his commitment to waiting patiently, illustrating the transformative power of reliance on God.

Waiting is not synonymous with the absence of suffering; rather, it is an acknowledgment that God's timeline may differ from ours. The waiting period becomes a testing ground for faith and perseverance, as articulated by David and echoed by Elder Charles. In discomfort, our character is refined, making us dependent on God's mercy.

Conclusion: Psalm 27 invites us to ponder the art of waiting on the Lord—a discipline that necessitates trust in His goodness and a belief that His promises unfold in perfect timing. It's a journey filled with the transformative power of reliance on God. As we reflect on David's psalm, may we cultivate unwavering confidence, a deep desire for God's presence, heartfelt pleas, and the discipline to wait patiently on the Lord.

Psalm 90 "Numbering our days" (Mon MP)

Reflection from Morning Prayer: Psalm 90

Introduction: Psalm 90, attributed to Moses, is a contemplative masterpiece offering insights into life's challenges and its fleeting essence. In this blog post, we delve into three key themes from Psalm 90—Reality, Reason, and Wisdom—and explore their profound relevance as we usher in a new year.

1. Reality - Embracing Life's Transience: Moses opens Psalm 90 by urging us to confront the brevity of life. Even if we were to live a thousand years, it would be a mere whisper in the vast expanse of eternity. This psalm encourages us to acknowledge the transient nature of our existence, recognizing that life is akin to a fleeting mist.

2. Reason - Grasping the Consequences of Sin: Within verses 7–11, Moses guides us to comprehend that the ephemerality of life is not arbitrary but intricately linked to the consequences of sin—echoing the curse pronounced in Genesis 3. The psalm underscores God's righteous wrath against ungodliness, prompting a thoughtful examination of our lives and a recognition that hidden sins cannot escape divine scrutiny.

3. Wisdom - Learning the Art of Numbering Our Days: In verse 12, Moses seeks divine wisdom, praying for the ability to "number our days." The deliberate use of the word "teach" emphasizes that living purposefully and wisely is a cultivated skill. As we embark on a new year, there is a call to pause, reflect on the past, and evaluate how we've utilized our time, resources, and relationships in alignment with God's ways.

Finding Hope Amidst Divine Judgment: Despite acknowledging God's judgment, Moses finds hope in verses 13–17. His plea for mercy, rejoicing in the steadfast love of the Lord, and anticipating divine favor are grounded in the unbreakable commitment of God's love. This steadfast love, even in the face of judgment, becomes the anchor of hope for redemption.

As we step into a new year, let Psalm 90 be a compass for intentional living. Rather than a call to recklessness, numbering our days invites us to align our lives with God's vision and purpose. Let us celebrate the unwavering hope found in God's promises, allowing it to shape our choices, interactions, and priorities throughout the coming year.

In the spirit of reflection, take a moment to ponder your daily decisions, relationships, and responses to challenges. Arm yourself with a notebook and pen, engage in introspection, and seek alignment with God's vision and purpose. May this new year be characterized by intentional living and a profound connection with the eternal hope that transcends life's fleeting moments.
